I am Richard and this channel is about the highs and lows of running my own Land Rover restoration business. Content is for entertainment and not intended as a step by step guide.
I live in a small village just outside High Wycombe in the beautiful Chiltern Hills area of England. Hard to believe that I am just 30 miles from the centre of London.
My background is in computing Project Management. Alas after decades of becoming increasingly tired of dealing with cretins I took that leap of Faith and turned a lifelong hobby into a successful Business.
I have a wonderful wife and 3 grown up sons who I am immensely proud of.
I love Land Rovers of old, Range Rovers specifically; there is something about the design, the capability and the image that attracts very interesting people.
If you want to write to me, please bear in mind that I am a one man operation, my life and business come first, emails I get around to as soon as I can. ChurchHouseClassics@Gmail.com.

Love your channel. When will you been starting work again on your Range Rover? Love looking at the work you do on Range Rovers
Good progress on Wesley my Land Rover. Afraid missing all sorts of car shows this summer but always next. Looks like I didnt look after Wesley - but I did. However hauling logs and tip stuff around, plus there were lots of instances of beer fuelled wacky races by various people - often when I wasn't at home - around my bumpy field. This and hauling 6 or 7 to the pub on Exmoor accounts for spring deterioration plus loose exhaust etc etc. and brakes slow you up. However have sold the field and hoping that when Wesley returns refurbed can spend a happy peaceful retirement with me in North Somerset and in North Devon by the seaside.
sounds like MOT man needs reporting to VOSA
lol @ ham fisted gibbon
Having had my Stag for over 30 years, I have had these out numerous times, and there are a number of ways and means. Lots of ridiculous myths as well. One bloke on a page about Brit cars "Stags are terrible, HALF the hreads are left handed, and they don't tell you!!!!!" FGS, I have had EVERY SINGLE nut or bolt undone on a Stag, and there is ONE (yes, ONE!!!!) LH thread, that is that water pump bolt, and it is LH for multiple reasons. It TELLS you in the book, AND it has "L" stamped on the top of it in every one I have had off (at least half a dozen). So in "Exagerworld", ONE is "half of them...." Ludicrous, but haters gotta hate. From memory, I use a hammer if I have to to remove some parts, but usually use pullers and press (or vice as a press. I have a small press, but often the vice with various size sockets as formers works better). I NEVER use a hammer to assemble, as the seal is graphite, and very very brittle/easily shattered. The book says to hammer stuff, but NOT once the water seal is in. Once that is in, it says to press on the impeller. The impellers are hit and miss when removing them. That is why I amassed handfuls of old pumps, because if an impeller is really stuck, it will often break before coming apart no matter what you do. One small point is the water pump oil seal. The original seal was a weird seal that NO ONE SELLS ANYMORE. I have only ever seen one in an old pump I pulled apart. It is shaped like a small volcano, (look at the sectioned diagram, you will see what I mean) : And is actually backwards, in that the open lip side of the seal faces the wrong way, ie pressure from the oil side opens it. It CANNOT go the other way, as the "volcano" angle would stop it fitting/push seal through the circlip. Doesn't matter; because the seals they supply now are the flush sided ones. Just make sure it is fitted opposite way to the "volcano" one in the diagram. That puts the lip the correct side, and the seal away from the circlip, that is, offset away from the circlip = perfect. If put the way the book says, the seal will foul the circlip, wheras the "lip toward oil" side is not only correct engineering practice, the outer edge of the seal can press in fully against the outer bearing shell. Initially, the water pump SHOULD come out by just turning the centre bolt. That drives it against the skewed teeth of the drive gear, and that propels it upward. while running, the slew of the gears pulls it in. So one of two things should happen, shaft complete WP will come out, or the shaft will come out, leaving the brass basket behind. The brass basket can be removed with a slide hammer. There are a couple of ways to secure it. You can use a hook, OR can get a disc with a hole in the middle and a bolt in it with a nut to secure it. file off the sides of the disc, and then angle it in and across, screw slide hammer into bolt thread - pull it out. I rebuilt my first leaking Stag WP, and then didn't have a problem for a long time, but then made the mistake of buying a "brand new Unipart one" that was one of the "not properly hardened ones" and it ate my jackshaft within 500 kms. From then on I rebuilt old ones with known shafts. I have done 330,000 kms in my car, so makes sense you'd go through a few. I had never bought any reconned parts/always used old parts/condition assessed by myself. I decided to give my car a birthday about ten years ago, (as big ends were getting a bit worn, crank had done 400,000 kms plus, 90k by previous owner, almost 300,000 then by me) and bought a "completely rebuilt" engine from the UK. I should have done what I wanted to do, rebuild an old block that I had here instead with a spare good crank that I had..................... The heads were skimmed far too far (the car is even now higher compression than they should be, even WITH the thickest gaskets); but even worse, when I went to fit the water pump, there were two huge gouges in the cast iron sealing surfaces in the block from where the guy had used a hook and slide hammer to remove the WP. I mean, HOW HARD do you have to belt cast iron a 1/4 of an inch thick to butcher it?? I wouldn't have bought it if I had known that. I have done it at least half a dozen times, and NEVER done any damage to those surfaces, and yet a "professional" does that????? So I had to use Devcon to fix it. It doesn't leak, but I KNOW it is there, and it really annoys me. I also have a Dolomite Sprint that I bought in 2000 and that shared everyday driving duties with the Stag until 2013 when a water leak put it off the road, and it has been laid up since then. But in the 13 years I drove that (including a Perth/Melbourne return trip I did summer of 2003) I never had to touch the water pump.............. and still haven't. That car is sitting in my Dad's garage, and with 4 cars and 4 bikes, I have never gotten around to getting it going again. But I have to move it soon, so........................ Anyway, great vid, good to see people doing things like this. Cheers.
Hello just subscribed to your channel i am restoring a 2a as well and fitting a servo i had to cut and remanufacture the top of the brake box for clearance under the bonnet on mine have seen others do it on youtube thanks bill
Still looks like a lot of work. Must be done for your Dad. Good man ,Bob
Good progress on a great classic vehicle. You certainly know all the short cut's regarding parts. See you in the next one. Cheers. 👍👍
Don’t change a thing Richard- They keep unsubscribing me and I keep subscribing again. Great content as always 👊🏼
Pull your finger out get the old girl fixed ( not Mrs churchy) 😅
Wouldn't go down the click bait road. Watch other channels who do it and most of the time it's not relevant. Editing the videos must be a nightmare.watching this weeks offering i noticed the royal protection vehicle was in the yard and then the stag appeared facing one direction then did a u turn in the workshop.obviously their will be holdups on one project so you move to another rather than sitting on your bum waiting for parts to arrive. I take it the royal protection vehicle is back with its owner as is the triumph stag.
Organized chaos! That's exactly how I work as well If it's not messy then your not working! Keep up the good work from NZ🙂
Great to see progress on the land rover Richard always love the videos you post a must watch for a Friday evening well done again Sir.
Slow but steady Richard. 👍
OK I only have 2.3k subs never will reach your dizzy heights, for shts and giggle I labelled one of my videos "Large Breast, Naked women and full frontal" I was amazed how many hits it got. It was just me BS ing.
Lol for click bait try some dancing ladies if you dare 🤣🤣
Have a topless woman as click bait. :D
Lovely to watch, as ever. Rear axle was not painted, though :) Looking forward to the engine and clutch work! Cheers.
Richard keep on going its great content!
Liking the no nonsense descriptions😂😂
Richard Lands end to John O'Groats in classic range rover it would be enjoyable Driving experience could you imagine doing the same distance in any land rover classic. range rovers best car ever made new range rovers are rubbish keep those videos coming 👍👍👍
Another gem Sir. Love the content and what you deliver is true workshop reality. Stick to you guns, thank you for posting, much appreciated. Your channel is always flagged up for me by the way.
In an attempt to attract more view and consequently subscribers, HubNut has been putting out some shorts which he has been sharing to other media platforms. Maybe worth a try.
Thank you for trying to help Richard's RUclips channel, but I'm not sure too many of the regular viewers would want to see him wearing shorts. After all, once one gets to a certain age, a man's legs are best kept covered... and that's before we even start on PPE and workshop safety regulations. 😉
@@Vintage-Fly-Guy 🤣
Re the click bate reference - try and resist the head in hands picture used by so many :) Keep up the good work as you are part of my saturday morning routine and would be missed
I've probably missed it and realise it needs to be roadworthy but isn't this old enough for MOT exemption?
A slightly more informative title for the video might help with views and recommendations ! Good progress on a great little (by your standards) project !
Sod the algorithms, I like your channel as it is, others who have gone down the drama clickbait route have lost my following and subscription. Keep buggering about and thanks for posting.
Good on you Richard. These videos take time and effort to make. It's appreciated, as is the advice you've sent via email. Will be sending you 10 quid via PayPal as a gesture for your efforts. Keep it up mate.
I'm subscribed & have notifications turned on but never get any when one of your videos are uploaded?
My god this takes me back to 1975 when I was trying to sort out twin Stomberg 175's on my old Vauxhall Viva 2.0 GT which were a permanent source of trouble. I gave up in the end & fitted twin Weber's along with a load of other Bill Blydenstein tuning parts. I'd love to get me a Stag or another classic but I've got nowhere to keep it. Envious.
Well done Richard. I guess the customers can chop back the carpet to create clearance for the clutch pedal. Wooleys sell black webbing trim that can then be wrapped around the cut edges.
Great video 👍🏻. Nice to see a MGB. I've got one with the V8 in it... which is why I came across your channel when looking for info on the RV8. Thanks for the video's 👍🏻 This MG is definitely going to turn into an adventure.
Great video 👍🏻 very informative.
Funds sent for a pint mate. Keep the videos coming. Cheers
Glad you sorted the clutch issue.i was beginning to think their might be an issue with the operating mechanism in the bell housing but thank god it wasn't . If it had been gearbox out again the men in white coats may have been in attendance and the profanity police would probably turn up 😂.
profanity Poh-Leese already have me on super double secret probation
Some of those Quickjacks that some RUclipsrs feature would be a good addition to the workshop for getting up-and-under with limited headroom… I thought early 70s Triumphs (TR6 etc) had non-ballasted coils / wiring and revised models from 72/73 introduced that design and philosophy with different resistance coils and that can lead to confusion and mistakes ? Shame you had to contend with more dodgy replacement parts…
I enjoyed that..... Missing boot on the rod that goes in to the backplate... You'll be doing it all over again soon enough 😂
You are right Richard a four post lift would be ideal for that type of job or a pit as well I always end up with a sore neck after abought ten minutes working on the floor doing work on something , don't know how you manage by yourself anyway well done Richard good job as always.
What a cool car! Love the Staaaaag!
Richard, HELP when I hear your intro music I dance I can't help it, What's worse I can't dance to save my life :) INNERESTUNG looks the the steering pump on a STAG is the same as a 70's Corvette and a lot of Chevies. I use those small magnets ALL the time I have some that fit inside my sockets.
pretty sure the packaging those magnets were supplied with warned against "internal use"
From an MG fan in South Africa, this will be a fun watch!
I owned a 1968 MGB .... yours in much better condition than mine was when I sold it for almost scrap.
Did you manage to do the Cruise control on the Range Rover 300TDI? Have a Disco 1 300tdi and want to fit in a cruise control its a 97 but cant find a cruise control kit.
Wonderful stuff, bring it on! Cheers.
Great video
Going to enjoy this one. Brings back good memories 😊
You sure asked a lot of questions in that one! 1. The “ is it a hole in the bulkhead” by the pedal box- looked like one of the securing holes for the cover, should be a captive nut under it. 2. Yes for some reason they fitted the coils upside down 3. Yes it is a 12v system, many people covert to a single 12v battery- I have. Leaves room for an isolator and the fuel pump and a filter in the other battery box, much better than underneath. 4. Sorry if I missed it but did you ever turn it by hand- is the engine free? Starter sounded “flat battery” so suspect you still have a connection problem and not a stuck starter- you were earthing to pedal box, is the engine to chassis earth any good? It goes across one of the engine mounts. 5. Strongly suggest remove the heater valve, it will be clogged up inside like the water pump was. I rebuilt my 73 MGB GT from a completely bare shell so I know every wire, nut and bolt. Feel free to fire questions and can supply pics if needed on anything. Finally, I found MGB Hive to be a better source of good parts and quicker delivery- better than the Lincoln guys! Good luck
Thank you for the info, the hole is a rust hole and you'll have to wait for ep2 to find out if the engine turns...
Great to MG being revived. Great content as always!
Perhaps BMC fitted the coil upside down in the hope that the sparks would come out more easily?! 😉
Possibly! I thought maybe this was an Australian spec
What’s going on with that steering wheel ? ???
You could almost believe it'd been in a crash...strange...
I think someone* mislaid the keys to the cheap krooklok that I found and needed to move the car. shame as the steering wheel will cost more to replace than the steering lock
